Generally, a low dose of CBD is 15mg. A medium dose is 15-45mg, and a high dose is anything above 45mg CBD. The other day, I took 500mg of CBD. That’s more than 10X a high dosage. To say the least, I was surprised by what happened.
As one of CBD Plaza’s curators, I’m constantly testing new CBD products. I’ve been experimenting with capsules, gummies, oils, topicals, patches, nuts, dried fruits, chap stick… even CBD toothpaste (which is amazing, btw). I’ve also been experimenting with dosage, and I was recently wondering what happens if I take way too much CBD. I had a 6,000mg CBD oil (made from CBD isolate) that was perfect for the test.
Before getting into the effects of taking an abnormally high dose of CBD, let’s talk about the effects of CBD when I take a normal dosage. I deal with moderate stress and low-grade anxiety. When I start to feel a little anxious, I’ll normally take a high dose of CBD (about 45mg CBD) and I feel calm pretty quickly. CBD oils hit me quicker than gummies or capsules, where gummies and capsules seem to last longer, but the feeling is the same. It’s a game changer for me. My racing thoughts slow down, the negative thoughts melt away and the heavy feeling that consumes my body goes away. I feel lighter on my feet. It’s kind of a weird feeling because I don’t feel high, and I don’t feel anything in particular, but I feel an absence of all the stress and anxiety I normally face.
When I took 500mg of CBD oil in a single dose, more than 10X a high dosage, I wouldn’t say I overdosed but I didn’t like the feeling it delivered. It made me feel more anxious than I can remember feeling. I was jittery and had this feeling where I wanted to jump out of my skin. I don’t suffer from severe anxiety, but I assume this is what severe anxiety feels like. I decided to lie down for a few minutes and then I was fine. It wasn’t a lasting effect, or an overdose in any way, but it was definitely a negative effect.
This is an extreme example of testing high dosages of CBD, but I think it raises some interesting points. First, I didn’t come anywhere near “overdosing.” I experienced a feeling I didn’t like, but it was short-lived and generally wasn’t a big scare. Second, you can definitely take too much CBD. I rely on CBD for my daily routine, and it always helps manage stress… until the time I took way too much. It’s important to start low and go slow when finding the right dosage. Personally, I’m going to avoid taking 500mg of CBD in the future.
